ABSTRACT

Although the Pilates method is widely used today including the rehabilitation, there are fewstudies evaluating the effects on respiratory parameters, detaching that breathing is among the firstprinciples of Pilates. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of the Mat Pilates method onrespiratory parameters inhealthy subjects. 10 healthy women were selected and were evaluated byspirometry, manovacuometry and cirtometry before and after intervention with the Mat Pilates for a periodof 10 weeks with a frequency of twice a week, totaling 20 sessions. Statistical analysis was performed bythe Shapiro-Wilk test followed by Student's t or Wilcoxon test, depending on the result of normality test foreach domain examined (p <0,05). The results showed that the Pilates method increased the maximumvoluntary ventilation (7.9%), inspiratory (24.7%) and expiratory (25%) muscle strength, besides increase inaxillary (85.9%), xifoideana(90.8%) and abdominal (192.3%) cirtometry. We conclude that the Mat Pilatesproved effective in improving the respiratory muscle strength and endurancebesidesthoracoabdominalmobility in healthy women...

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of ethanol and morphine on nociceptive behavioral responses evoked by the injection of formalin into the temporomandibular joint region of rats (the TMJ formalin test). In experiment 1, animals were given an ethanol solution (6.5 por cento) or tap water to drink for 4 and 10 days, before the procedure for TMJ pain. In the group treated for 4 days, significant analgesia was observed in the TMJ formalin test, whereas the group treated for 10 days did not show this effect, revealing the development of tolerance to ethanol antinociceptive effects. In experiment 2, animals were submitted to chronic regimen of ethanol (6.5 por cento for 10 days did not show this effect, revealing the development of tolerance to ethanol antinociceptive effects...
